What are Intersectional or Itoh Peonies?

Intersectional Itoh Peonies are a cross between the herbaceous (or bush) peony and the tree peony. These crosses have produced new colors, The plants have the leaf form of tree peonies, but die to the ground in the winter. The plants are strong and healthy with a nice round bush form generally shorter than most tree peonies. Since they are recent introductions and are in short supply the price is high.

Toichi Itoh of Japan made the first successful tree/bush peony cross after years of effor. Intersectional peonies are frequently referred to as 'Itoh' in his honor.
