Amoena: White standards, colored falls   Re: Abbreviation for rebloomer.
Band: An edge around falls or standards.   Rebloomer: An iris that blooms at any other time of year after normal spring bloom.
Beard: Fuzzy hairs at top of falls.   Remontant: See rebloomer.
Bicolor: Standards and falls are two different colors.   Reverse amoena: Colored standards and lighter (sometimes white) falls.
Bitone: Standards and falls two different shades of same color.   Reverse bitone: Standards are darker shade of fall color.
Blend: Combination of several colors.   Rim: Thinner edge of color around falls or standards.
Color break: Random splashes of color   Ruffles: Flower edges are fluted/waved.
Dots: Peppering, generally on plicatas.   Season: When the iris blooms.
E: Blooms early in the season.   Seedling: A variety being studied for possible introduction.
Falls: The lower three petals of the flower.   Self: Standards and falls are same color.
Flounce: Appendage extending from end of beard   Shoulder: Same as haft .
Ground color: Usually mentioned with plicatas; base color under dots or peppering.   Signal: A patch of color beneath beard ends.
Haft: Top part of falls to either side of beards.   Splashes: Random splashes of color on falls, standards or both.
Horns: Points rising from ends of beards.   Spoons: Appendages at ends of beards looking like small spoons.
Increase: New side growth on plants.   Standards: The upper three petals of the flower.
L: Blooms late in the season.   Stitches: Petals edges look hemstitched
Lace: Edges of petals are serrated.   Streaks: See splashes.
Luminata: Style arms and hafts of white or yellow; pale veining on falls.   Style arms: Small segments inside heart of flower, above the beards.
M: Blooms middle of the season.   Substance: Thickness of petals.
Neglecta: Two tones of blue/violet.   Variegata: A bicolor with yellow standards.
Peppering: Small dots of color.   VE: Blooms very early in season.
Plicata: Stitched or stippled margin color on white.   VL: Blooms very late in the season.
